Vanuatu Earthquake-On December 17, 2024, a magnitude 7.3 earthquake struck near Port Vila, the capital of Vanuatu, causing significant damage and casualties.
Extent of the Damage
Port Vila Vanuatu Earthquake Today-The earthquake led to the collapse of several buildings, including a complex housing multiple foreign embassies. The U.S. Embassy sustained considerable damage and is closed until further notice. All embassy personnel are safe and accounted for.
Other diplomatic missions, such as the British High Commission, the French Embassy, and the New Zealand High Commission, also reported damage.
Casualties and Injuries
Reports indicate at least one confirmed death, with unconfirmed reports suggesting additional fatalities. Several individuals have been injured, with some receiving treatment at Vila Central Hospital.
Infrastructure Impact
Port Vila Earthquake-The earthquake caused landslides that blocked roads and damaged infrastructure, including the runway at Bauerfield International Airport. This has led to flight cancellations and disruptions in transportation.
Tsunami Warning and Aftershocks
An initial tsunami warning was issued but later canceled. The region has experienced several aftershocks, ranging from magnitudes 4.7 to 5.5, contributing to the challenges faced by rescue and relief efforts.
International Response
Neighboring countries, including Australia and New Zealand, have expressed readiness to assist Vanuatu. The Australian government has stated it “stands ready to support Vanuatu as the extent of the damage is assessed.”
